Greenmen are based on 12th century sculptures found in European churches. They typically are a face within leaves representing a wild woodland spirit. The prevailing theory is that they were in place to make a familiar feel as Pagans were converting to Christianity. My interpretation of this legend is more broad to show the convergence of humans and nature.
